Production Research

Looking at the fonts of real films this gives more of an idea of what are font should look like for our media production. Each of the fonts suite the type of film that they are for and they are all different depending if it is more of a horror or thriller. Most of the fonts are all capitals and stand out from the background to make the title catch your eye.

This is the font from the film Orphan. This font fits the film that it is for as it looks like it has been wrote on a wall and is in someone's handwriting. Most titles for films are in bold block letters to stand our and make it catch your eye so you buy it. The font is in white so it stands our from the background which is a dark grey blue colour. They use this colour because it gives the tile an eerie feel

This font is for the film Inception. This font is in very bold block red letters. This could be to catch the eye of someone walking by and make it stand out from the rest of the film covers/ posters. You do not always see red writing on a blue background because the colours do not usually mix However this title fits the feeling of the film and looks good against the background.

This title is for the film Unknown. Unlike the rest of the font this font is two different colours a light blue and a white. The fits well will the rest of the cover as the majority of the cover is this blueish. These letters are all very close together and are at a slight slant. This is not really the type of font that we are looking at as this film title is more for a thriller/ Action adventure.

This title is for the film The Collector. This title is not very distinctive title as it is small white letters on a blain black background. Despite not being a world wide font that everyone knows such as the Harry Potter films it still stands our from the background. And unlike unknown the letters are very far apart for each other. This is a little more of the type of font that we are looking at.

This title if for the film Psycho. This is a very distinctive title with a font that not many other films are able to pull of. The font is large yellow writing which seems to be a crack through the middle of it. The crack in font tells you some about the movie and that it isn't a conventional film as the majority have plain text.

This title is for the film Se7en. The font for this title is red and unlike most films have the font in lowercase letters instead of the block capitals which most films have which you can see above. The font fits the film well as it is a very gory movie with lots of blood which this could suggest.

These titles have gave us an idea for what we want the title of our film to look like. The title of the is one of the first things that you see when you are buying a film and it can tell you a lot about the film from the colour of the font having it black can suggest that it is a dark film, the colour of red could tell us that it has a lot of blood through out the film and bright colours such as green or yellow could mean that the film is either a comedy or a rom-com. The style of the font also tells you a lot about the film and you want it to catch someones eye. So giving your film large round letters is not probably best for a horror or thriller. The horror genre normally have scruffy writing to give the effect that someone has scratched it into a wall or have a bold sharp letters. For our production we want to have our font in a either black or white, depending on the background to make it stand out and have it in block capital letters.

For our target audience we are looking at producing our film for the younger generation such as 18-25 or the 26-35 years olds. We think that this will be an ideal target audience to aim for because any younger and they are too young to be able to legally watch the majority of horror films out. however much older and they may not enjoy these types of films. We think that most of the people who enjoy the films below will also enjoy our film because it will have the same feeling as we are aiming for.

For our questionnaire we are going to ask some people in our class and outside to answer the questions and after we have done that I will collect all the answers to the questions and create a chart or graph to show what we have found.

After getting all of the results from the questionnaire that we made a couple of weeks ago we now have a much better understanding of what target audience we are looking at and in more of a direction that we should be looking at. As well as the target audience the questionnaire also showed us things that we should incorporate in to our production. It did that by asking people on one of the questions what do they think makes a good Horror/ Thriller film and most of the people answered the same. By asking this question we have found what people like to see in a horror films and that makes it easier for us to make a film opening that people know not only what genre the film opening is but find it interesting as well. Our target audience is almost as predicted that the majority of people which like the Horror genre are mostly of the younger generations. Another thing that we found out by the questionnaire is the best way to build suspense in a horror film is buy using music. We can use this result and incorporate in to our production so we can build suspense as our protagonist is walking up to the abandoned house.

How often do you watch Horror/ Thriller Films?

How important is the opening to a film?

What do you feel is the best way to build suspense in a film?

What aged group do you think that Horror/ Thriller films are mainly aimed at?

These are the top 15 films out in the thriller genre. All of them have made over 50 million dollars since they have been out and have made over 10 million in the first week. Most of the studios have only one or two films in the top 15 with the exception of universal which has three movies distributed by them.

I have been looking at film genres and seeing what are the conventions of these film genres. The two in blue are the film genres that we feel our media production would fit in to. Mainly because these two genres have the qualities that we tried to use in our production as well as keeping the audience on the edge of their seat. Some of the other aspects that we would like to look at it these two genres are the lighting, props, costume and set as i feel like looking at them could help us improve our own piece.

When making our production company I have been looking at already existing production companies logos. We have been looking at bigger and the smaller production companies To see the difference between the two's logos.

Lionsgate
The logo of the production company "Lionsgate" is one of the more simple logos for the big production companies. The logo is of large silver gates opening up to reveal the word Lionsgate. The background seems to a be as stormy clouds with the sun just shining through of the middle to show that there is actually clear sky.

Paramount
The logo for "Paramount" is a little different. This one features stars flying over the top of mount everest with clouds on either side. The writing unlike Lionsgate are joined together and are not all in block capitals.

20th Century Fox
This is one of the most well known production companies logos. Almost every one knows this logo as it has created some of the worlds biggest films. The logo has stayed unchanged for decades now with its iconic spotlights shining in to the sky and the golden font. Not many other production companies except perhaps Disney are so iconic and known all around the world.

Obviously the large companies have better logos than the smaller companies because they have the budget to be able to make a better logo, however smaller companies can still have good logos usually having a black background, the name of their company and a small logo underneath.
For the production company we are aiming to make a simple logo with the name of our production underneath it.

These are some pictures of interrogations and interrogation rooms. They all have one thing in common and that is that they are all very simple and dark rooms. They have minimal light normally coming from one light source to give that scary feeling to the scene this is what we are aim for in our production, we want to give our film the same feeling. We can do this by giving the scene minimal light to the scene as well as adding an effect to make it look grey.

For my mood board I gathered a collection of images from the internet to show the sort of eerie film that we are aiming to produce. As well as giving us more of an idea on how to make our film feel like the genre that we are aiming to get. The things that all of the images have in common is that they all have very dull and discoloured tints on them to give the this scary feeling to them.

These are some film opening that I have analysed. The films that I have chosen are both quite dark films but have very different openings to one another and have different ways to show the horror/ thriller genre. With some being physically scary and others are more disturbing, such as the three little girls committing suicide in the Women in Black. Each film has a different way of making their film suit the Horror/ Thriller Genre.
